The Benefits of Growing Flowers with Your Veggies

May 21, 2022

Your neighbor’s yard might be well manicured with isolated flowerbeds and a proper-looking garden. But chances are those perfectionists are missing out on the wonders of mixing flowers and vegetables in the same garden or planter box. Mixing the two can attract more bees and beneficial insects, increase plant health, and improve your garden’s bounty. We’ve put together a few ways to mingle flowers and vegetables in your garden.

Bloom Time is Essential

On the back of every seed package is information about when a plant will bloom. To get the most from your flower and vegetable combination, be sure the flowers will bloom at the same time as your nearby vegetables.

Give Them Space (or not)

There is no set rule when planting flowers with veggies. You can plant them in the same row or space, or plant each in their own row. Just be sure to know where one plant ends and another begins.

Adjust for Height

The flower and vegetable height is also listed on the back of seed packets. If you’re growing lettuce, consider nearby flowers that offer some shade. But overall, you’ll want to plant flowers that do not fight for sunlight.

Coastal Has What You Need

You’ll find flower and vegetable starts and seeds at your nearby Coastal. Stop by and pick up hoses, garden sprinklers, soakers, shovels, fertilizers, lawn mowers, as well as sage advice on what grows best in your section of the Pacific Northwest.
