OSU Food Preservation and Safety Hotline Now Open
Canning season is here. To help families avoid botulism, preserve special foods, and convert old recipes to modern standards, Oregon State University’s food preservation and safety hotline is ready to take calls. The hotline, available through October 14, is open from 9AM to 4PM Monday through Friday at 800-354-7319. Those taking the calls must have completed 40 hours of training, receiving a Master Food Preservers certificate.
Wolf Pack Kills Livestock in Washington
Members of the so-called Profanity Peak wolf pack have killed a calf in the Colville National Forest, west of Kettle Falls and Colville, Washington. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife are in communication with the rancher affected by the attack and are working to prevent further losses.
Irrigation District Accused of Cheating Farmers
According to a federal complaint, several Oregon farmers with senior water rights have accused the Westland Irrigation District of unconstitutionally depriving them of their water rights. They are seeking $2.9 million in damages.
Oregon Agricultural Research Stations Get New OSU Leaders
The Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Centers in Burns and Union, Oregon will have new leadership in the coming months. Oregon State University has named David Bohnert the interim director of both facilities, and Patricia Kennedy, the interim director of the agricultural-sciences degree at Eastern Oregon University.
State of Oregon Hopes to Dismiss Logging Lawsuit
In a complaint filed by Linn County earlier this year, state forest management is being accused of depriving multiple counties of more than $1.4 billion in possible logging revenue. The complaint states that wildlife, water quality, and recreation are considered a priority over timber harvests. Attorneys for Oregon are hoping to throw the case out, basing their argument on the greatest permanent value to the state, not individual counties. The lawsuit is intended to alter the definition of greatest permanent value.
